Rowan Keenan — Perkiomen Valley School District

This installment of our series of interviews with school director candidates across Pennsylvania brings us to the Perkiomen Valley School District.

Rowan Keenan is running for school director in Perkiomen Valley School District, located in Montgomery County. He is a registered Republican and an attorney.

Why are you running for school board?

To do what I can to ensure that my children get the best education possible. I have four children currently attending Perkiomen Valley middle and elementary schools, three girls and one boy, and another boy who is to start kindergarten at South Elementary in 2027.

What are the most important issues facing your district?

Now and in the long run for our students: losing critical thinking to technology and artificial intelligence and non-scholastic endeavors. In the short run, the district is facing some contraction pains combined with ever rising costs and is headed into a budgetary crisis.

What is your professional background/experience? What skills would you bring to the board?

I am an attorney, barred in the State of Pennsylvania since 2004, and I served on Collegeville Borough Council for twelve years and the Collegeville Trappe Municipal Authority for eight years.  I am a member and was the financial officer on the Board of the Collegeville Fire Company No 1 for fifteen years, and I serve on the Board of the Perkiomen Valley Student Loan Association. In addition to my Juris Doctorate, I have a Master of Laws in taxation. I am skilled and knowledgeable about the administrative aspects of local government and nonprofits.

Have you run for political office previously? Have you been politically active?

I have run for political office before. I was elected to the Collegeville Borough Council three times. My platform was to get the new Collegeville Fire Station built, and after twelve years I completed what I set out to do after overcoming many difficulties.

Are you running with other candidates?

I am running with Russ Larson, Don Fountain and Jason Saylor.

What is the most important role of the school board in your opinion?

To provide the best education to the children in Perkiomen Valley schools as directed by their constituents and to lead the school without self interest.
