Don’t let politicians & lobbyists mess with YOUR credit card!

THE ISSUE IN PENNSYLVANIA

Draft proposals are being promoted by certain interest groups in Pennsylvania that would prohibit financial institutions from collecting interchange on the sales tax portion of credit and debit card transactions. Interchange is the fee merchants pay to transmit their payments electronically.

  1. Sales tax should benefit the residents of the state, not a corporation. Its not going to require new payment machines, its going to need a software edit to ignore sales tax.

    1. Judah, We might disagree about taxes; yet, on this issue we agree more than we disagree.
      1. When you buy something with a credit card, the merchant pays a fee in order to accept that payment. Several parties get a cut of that fee, including the bank that issued your credit card. This portion that goes to the card issuer is known as “interchange,” and it typically ranges from about 1% to 3% of your transaction amount, plus a flat fee.
      2. Basically, the idea is card issuers should not collect an “interchange” on taxes.
      3. BROAD + LIBERTY STAFF, you wrote: “Draft proposals are being promoted by certain interest groups in Pennsylvania that would prohibit financial institutions from collecting interchange on the sales tax portion…” Why can’t you report who these “certain interest groups” are? Your take on this issue seems strongly suspect and embarrassing. How much did you get paid for this stance by card issuers?

  2. Earlier today I purchased cigars in DelCo. The cashier said “it takes a bit longer for the second part which is the tax portion.” This indicates to me that this is mostly a non-issue, and stores are already using a solution for this that already exists. At least DelCo. cigars stores seem to be on top of it…

  3. Broad + Liberty Staff,
You have had this “Partner Content” on your banner for two weeks. How much did they pay you? I pay for multiple subscriptions and would pay between $100-$150 to be able to read this website. If you are looking for sponsors, have you thought about partnering with Draft Kings? Draft Kings is more honest than your current “Partner Content” providers regarding this issue.
